Grieg Shipping Group Orders 6+4 New Open Hatch Vessels
Grieg Shipping Group has signed newbuildings contracts with Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, S. Korea for the building of six Open Hatch Conventional Crane General Cargo Carriers including options for the building of four additional vessels.
The vessels’ design represents a further development of our existing Open Hatch Gantry Crane design, which is based on input from the group’s commercial and technical departments as well as sailing personnel, and last but not least close to 50 years of experience from open hatch shipping. Our objective and work towards reduced energy consumption has been an important criteria in the process. The vessels are 48,700 dwt. and with panamax beam.
The first two vessels will be delivered during 2nd half 2012 and the remaining four during 2013. The optional vessels are scheduled for delivery during the 4th quarter of 2013 and first half 2014. We are about to complete the financing for the vessels at competitive terms.
There are few shipyards capable of building this type of special tonnage, and it is therefore important for us to have good and long term cooperation with Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, which is a world leading shipyard within building of quality tonnage. During 2009 and this year, Grieg has taken delivery of four stat-of-the-art Open Hatch Gantry Crane vessels from the same builder.
Grieg Shipping Group is a fully integrated shipping group which owns and manages 26 open hatch ships. The specialized vessels are tailor made to meet customers’ high quality transportation and logistics requirements to deliver superior cargo care. Our main cargoes are wood pulp, other forestry products and steel products. With the contracting of vessels with specially designed Conventional Cranes, the group will obtain a more diversified fleet, which we expect to give new cargo opportunities and increased earnings potential. The ordering is part of the group’s further development and supports Grieg’s long term commitment in this segment. |
